Visas

Do I need a visa to study at Alba English?

Courses up to six months

If you have a passport from an EU country, you do not need a visa to study at Alba English.

Even after Brexit, if you have an EU passport, you can study at Alba English for up to 6 months without a visa

Chris Russell, School Director

There are some other countries, like Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan where you don’t need a visa to study at Alba English for less than six months. Check the requirements for your country on the UK Government website

If you come from another country (including China, Oman or Saudi Arabia) you’ll need a Visitor Visa. This visa lets you stay in the UK for up to six months and take courses with an approved accreditation. Because Alba English is accredited by the British Council, this means you can study with us! You can apply for a visitor visa online up to 3 months before your arrival on the UK Government website. It costs £95.

Courses from six to eleven months

To study with us for between 6 and 11 months, you’ll need a short-term study visa. You need this if you are coming from any country, including the EU.

You need to apply for your course and pay for it first, then we can issue you with a letter of confirmation, which you’ll need when applying. It costs £186 to apply for this visa. We only issue the letter if you study with us full-time (16 hours per week or more).

If you apply for the visa, but aren’t accepted for any reason, we will refund any fees you’ve paid to us (except any bank transfer charges).

You can find out more and apply online on the UK Government website.

Frequently Asked Questions

I arrived in the UK before 1 January 2021 and have settled or pre-settled status. Can I study at Alba English?

Yes! You can study part-time or full-time courses without any restrictions.

Can I work in the UK while studying?

You can only work in the UK if you have a specific visa. Students who come without a visa, on a visitor visa or short-term study visa cannot work in the UK.

Can I do unpaid work in the UK while on a short-term study visa?

You can do some volunteering, but it depends on the details. We recommend asking for advice from any organisation you want to volunteer for.

Do I need to pay extra for healthcare?

If you are studying for less than 6 months, you should have travel insurance which covers healthcare while you’re in the UK. If you are from an EEA country or Switzerland, you should get a European Health Insurance Card before you come to Scotland. This will allow you access to our National Health Service in the same way as Scottish people do. This hasn’t changed after Brexit.

If you are studying for 6 – 11 months, you’ll need to pay the ‘healthcare surcharge’, which will allow you to access the National Health Service while you are here. This normally costs £470. Check what you need to pay on this government website. Select ‘Study (non Points-Based System)’ for ‘Visa Route’, then ‘Study – Short-term Study 11-months – English Language’ for ‘Visa type’)

Do I need to show any evidence of my course at the border?

If you’re studying for less than 6 months, the government may ask for proof of the following at the border

you’ve been accepted on to a course by an accredited institution, for example a letter of acceptance on official headed paper stating the course name, duration and cost

We can supply a letter with that confirmation. Just ask us after you’ve made the payment for your course.

Note that requirements are different for different countries and sometimes change. Check the latest information on the UK Government website.
