Young Learner Study Assistants

Study Assistants

At Alba, there are extra native English speakers in the classes.

We employ Study Assistants so that students must speak English. Study Assistants are typically aged 16 or 17 and from Edinburgh. They motivate junior students and give more practice with native English speakers.

Our students said:
"Study Assistants are very important because it is helpful to have English people with your same age"
Tommaso, Italy
"I like it because they were our age so we talked to them a lot and it helped to improve our English"
Victoria, Spain

Saturday Excursions

Every Saturday there is a full-day excursion outside Edinburgh, typically 8.30am – 6pm.

Each excursion shows a different part of Scotland, from the natural beauty of Loch Katrine, to exploring the designer shops in Glasgow and the history of Stirling Castle.

Accommodation

Homestay hosts provide a welcoming and caring environment. Our hosts are either parents themselves or have experience with teenagers. Hosts provide breakfast and dinner for students, while lunch is provided by the school. Students use a local bus pass to travel around easily.

“Vivien is always helpful, she's friendly and she tries to speak slowly to help us. I love her!”
Noemi, Italy
“I liked my 'mum' because she was such a friendly person. She was fun and made me feel at home. I'd recommend Sandra as a host family to a friend because I was very glad to know her”
Maria, Spain

Safety

We take safety extremely seriously. All our staff, including teachers, homestay hosts and taxi drivers, are PVG-checked (police checked) to ensure their suitability to work with teenagers. We have a first-aid trained member of staff at the school and ensure a first-aid kit is taken on activities and excursions. All students are given an emergency phone number so that they can contact the Programme Coordinator 24 hours a day in the unlikely event of an emergency. Click here for our full Safeguarding Policy.
